BMW EVs Will Feature Soundtracks Composed By Hans Zimmer — The Original OST
Two major handicaps for electric vehicles - costs, and distances that can be covered - are slowly being addressed by manufacturers across the globe. However, the biggest problem still remains. That issue is noise and sound, or lack of it.
German based auto giant BMW came up with the easiest solution they could think of - call Hans Zimmer. The Hollywood big-shot has already collaborated on the soundtrack for the BMW's Vision M Next concept car.
Electric motors offer peace and quiet on a constant basis, killing the thrill and joy that a howling internal combustion engine provides. BMW addressed the want to preserve the exciting audio aspect of driving for EVs that don't produce the same sounds.
The Vision M Next hybrid, with an electric-only range of 100 kilometers, is the first to showcase the BMW Iconic Sounds Electric feature. A feature BMW says will be present in all it's future electric vehicles.
The soundscape is more than a copy of an engine. It's not like the audio enhancement BMW uses to mask the grunt of the three-cylinder engine of the current i8. Instead, the new soundtrack will offer different audio stimulation depending on the driving situation.
Hans Zimmer explains, "When the driver interacts with the accelerator pedal, it is not only a mechanical touch point but also a performative element. Accelerating becomes an experience during which the driver moves through a series of gradually morphing sound textures."
BMW is not the only manufacturer trying to find creative solutions to the 'silent' problems of electric vehicles. Mercedes-AMG and Volkswagen too are are working along similar paths.
BMW said, "The goal is to create harmony between the driver and the electrically driven vehicle. And if there's anyone qualified to create passion through sound, it's Zimmer."
Hans Zimmer, a composer and producer by profession won an Oscar for the Original Sound Track for the The Lion King. His list of credits includes adrenaline-packed action films such as The Rock, Gladiator, and Days of Thunder. Hans Zimmer is credited with the sound technique 'Bwuam', in which a major plot point is revealed and the music blasts out a single note loudly.
Imagine that, but instead of learning that Brigadier General Francis X. "Frank" Hummel got the nuclear codes in The Rock, you're just driving up an on-ramp. In a futuristic world where cars have gone silent, BMW still wants to stimulate audio senses. A personal music score may not match an engine note, but it definitely makes driving a whole lot more fun!
Thoughts About BMW And Hans Zimmer Collaborating To Create Personalized Music Scores For EVs
That's what happens when you put two of the best German brands together. BMW and Hans Zimmer are top brands in their own spaces and they're collaborating to create personalized music scores for EVs. Wow! We wonder if each EV gets only one set of sounds or will there be enough to make people want to keep driving. I guess we'll know more when the sound tracks launch. We cannot wait to experience this. It's like driving in your own movie!
