Low Sales Numbers Forces BMW To Discontinue 3-Series GT
BMW is set to discontinue the 3-Series GT brand globally. According to a report by Zigwheels, the current-gen 3-Series GT will be the last of the kind. This according to BMW is mainly owed to low demand in the segment and tough competition from SUVs.
According to the report, one of BMW's senior officials confirmed that there would be no successor to the 3-Series GT. However, it has not been disclosed as to when exactly production of the 3-Series GT will be stopped.
Hence, the model will continue to be available for purchase at BMW dealerships until an official announcement is made. The 3-Series Gran Turismo is based on the 3-Series sedan and since its debut remained mechanically similar to the sedan.
The major differentiating factor is the design, especially at the rear of the car. At the rear is a sloping roofline and a raised trunk. This allowed the 3-Series GT to have the performance and handling of the sedan with the added practicality of a large boot space.
This positioned the GT at uniquely in the Indian market as it had never had any real competition. However, it faced tough competition from SUVs and the sedan variant outsold the GT by a large margin.
This was observed across global markets where the 3 GT was sold, hence the decision was taken to let go of the 3-Series GT. The drivetrain and interior remains the same as in the sedan. In the Indian market, the BMW 3-Series GT is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel or a 2.0-litre petrol engine.
The diesel engine produces a maximum power output of 190bhp and a peak torque output of 400Nm. The petrol engine on the other hand produces 252bhp and 350Nm. The rear wheels are driven via an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Thoughts On BMW 3-Series GT To Be Discontinued
The BMW 3-Series GT is a car that was positioned uniquely and enjoyed an almost niche status. It is very stylish and practical at the same time. However, the sales numbers decide the fate of every car in the automotive industry and BMW no longer sees the 3 GT being profitable to the company. However, BMW hasn't commented on the larger 6-Series GT and whether or not it would remain in production.
