Bangalore Traffic Police Books 6,800 Cases & Collects Rs 72.5 Lakh in Fines Within Five Days

The traffic police in Bangalore have collected Rs 72.5 lakh in fines within five days' time. Just five days after the new traffic penalties were implemented, Bangalore Traffic Police has revealed that over 6,800 cases were booked and Rs 72.5 lakh was collected in fines.

Traffic rule violators are being fined strictly and that has brought about a change in the way motorists ride/drive. The Indian government implemented the new Motor Vehicles Amendment Act last week and it has been five days since then.

The new rules bring with it a steep increase in fines for traffic violations. This has sparked controversy and in some cases violence. There was a clash between motorists and the police in Bhubaneshwar, that ended with a lathicharge. Two agitated motorists set fire to their own vehicles after their fines ran into thousands.

According to the new rules, the minimum fine is set at Rs 1,000. Bigger offences like riding/driving under the influence of alcohol attracts a bigger fine of Rs 10,000. Well, it is safe to say that violators in the last five days have coughed up a lot of money in fines.

The biggest contributors to the fines are those riding without helmets. According to TOI, helmet-related violations brought in Rs 46 lakh in penalties. A total of 4,613 cases were filed for this offence and this includes pillion rider without helmet, rider without helmet and non ISI helmet violators.

The second-largest contributor to the total amount of fines is mobile phone usage. The total amount of fines paid by motorists using a mobile phone while behind the wheel or handlebar amounted to Rs 13 lakh. 695 challans were issued for this offence.

708 challans were issued for driving without wearing the seatbelt, and a total of Rs 7 lakh was collected for this offence. Motorists riding/driving in a one-way contributed a total of Rs 2 lakh. Those driving without vehicle insurance paid a total of Rs 1.4 lakh in fines.

The first two days since the implementation of the new rules saw the police booking an average of 1,488 cases per day while the next three days saw this number drop to 1,095 cases per day. This drop in the number of cases could be due to the fact that motorists are adapting to the new rules and regulations and following the rules.

According to the report, Transport officials said that there was a drastic increase in the number of people queuing up at transport offices, insurance companies' branches and emission testing centres. This could be observed at all petrol stations with emission testing centres across the city.

The number of cases and violations will drop drastically within a few days. The motorists who intend to follow the rules will get their vehicles, its documents and their riding/driving style in place. Those who intentionally break the rules though will have a tough time ahead as the traffic police will now be able to concentrate on them more.
