No Using Mobiles While Riding/Driving In Bangalore From 20th June — Hefty Fines Apply

Bangalore traffic rules have been updated starting today (20th June). Any person found using mobile phones while riding/driving will attract a fine of over Rs 1000. According to the new traffic rules, usage of mobile phones in any way is now considered a traffic violation in the city.

According to Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act and 230A of Karnataka's Motor Vehicles Act, mobile phones need to be switched off while riding or driving around the city. However, since it is impossible to get people to switch off their phones completely, usage of it in any way will be considered a rule violation.

The new rule is on par with rash driving and wrong parking, attracting 10 times more penalties than before. Motorcycle riders will also be barred from connecting their earphones or Bluetooth devices, which will also be considered a violation of the new traffic rules in the city.

Traffic police in the city have also said that considering the increase in the fine amount, they will ensure proper evidence is available. The traffic cops in Bangalore will also receive upgraded equipment to ensure the new rules are being followed by motorists.

However, there is a slight relaxation in rules for navigation. The mobile phone should be placed on a holder, for it to not be considered a violation. Although if found holding the phone while navigating, then the new traffic fines will apply.

Also, mobile phones can be connected to a car's Bluetooth speakers to listen to music, however, it should not cause any disturbance to other motorists.

The new traffic rules state that the fine for first-time violation is Rs 1000, which will increase to Rs 2000 if caught a second time. To curb motorists from violating the new rules, the traffic police also urge others to post any such instances online, which will be addressed. The city will also have high-end CCTV cameras to catch traffic violators, based on which the complaint will be registered.

Thoughts On The New Bangalore Traffic Rules & Fines

It is a great step by the Bangalore Traffic Police to introduce new stricter rules in the city. It will ensure a reduction in the number of traffic violators; offering a safer commute for the other motorists. However, prohibiting the usage of Bluetooth devices and earphones for motorcyclists is sure to stir up mixed reactions, at least initially.
