Ban On Old Cars In Delhi: Old Cars From Other States Are Not Allowed In Delhi Either

It is a well-known fact that the government has banned the usage of diesel and petrol vehicles older than 10 years and 15 years respectively. The government has faced flak for the rule, but according to authorities, this rule had to be brought into play because pollution in the national capital region has crossed unprecedented levels.

Ban On Old Cars In NCR: What Is And Isn’t Allowed

Delhi is now one of the most polluted cities in the world and the government along with organisations like the NGT (National Green Tribunal) are taking steps to curb pollution. It was the NGT that suggested the ban on old private vehicles and the government has enforced it.

Almost every citizen living in an urban area is well aware of the pollution levels and the rules being imposed to curb it. However, there are some people who do not have an idea of the happenings and most rural citizens seem to have no clue about it.

The uninformed and uninitiated citizens create a scene whenever they are stopped and questioned for using an old vehicle. It is for this very reason that the police have come up with a video, clearly explaining what the rule does and does not allow.

The video appears to be taken in a training room and one of the officials from the Delhi Traffic Police safety cell explains the rule clearly. Right off the bat, it is crystal clear that this rule does not allow a lot of things.

For starters, as already known, the petrol-powered vehicles that are 15-years-old and diesel-powered vehicles that are 10-years-old are no longer allowed to ply on the roads in the NCR.

According to the official, this rule not only applies to the vehicles registered in Delhi, but also vehicles from other states and union territories. The national capital region includes the states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi.

These states are in close proximity and one can cross a couple of states in a couple of hours. Most vehicles registered in Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are found plying in delhi on a daily basis.

In order to prevent these vehicles from flouting the rules, the police have decided not to allow old vehicles from any other state also to pass through Delhi. This might affect tourism in the state. The fine that would be imposed on offenders too is very steep.

Rs 15,000 is the fine that the court would impose on those using old vehicles. The owner would also have to sign an affidavit agreeing not to bring the car into the city once again. The officer also warns that the car could be seized. The cars area also not allowed to be transferred to other states, and this has left car owners in a fix.

Thoughts On Old Vehicles Ban In NCR

All developed countries have a car scrapping policy wherein a citizen can take a car that is past its prime to a scrapyard and get decent value for money for it, and the car is scrapped in an eco friendly manner.

India still does not have a scrapping policy and this puts car owners in a fix because they cannot sell their cars in any other state as well. The initiatives taken by the government are appreciated, but these initiatives need some extra reinforcement and this reinforcement will only come through a proper scrapping policy.
