Audi R8 To Be Replaced By All-Electric Supercar — V10 Soundtrack To Be Replaced By Electric Whine
German luxury carmaker Audi recently updated the iconic R8 supercar by giving it more power for the performance model as well as tweaking its design. The result is a supercar that looks modern while retaining the iconic V10 soundtrack.
However, a new report by CAR Magazine citing sources at Audi has revealed that Ingolstadt's current R8 will be the very last of its kind. According to the British publication, Audi will replace the internal combustion engine powered R8 in three years time with an electric supercar, that will bear the name e-tron GTR while drawing power from three electric motors.
CAR magazine claims that in three years time, the all-electric e-tron GTR will hit the streets with 650bhp from the trio of electric motors that will be charged up by a solid-state battery pack with a capacity of 95kWh. This battery will allow the e-tron GTR to cover 483 kilometres on a single charge. The battery pack will feature wireless charging, which should eliminate the need for pesky chargers and the annoying different styles of charging plugs.
The report claims that the new Audi e-tron GTR will be based heavily on the Porsche Taycan, which will be the first all-electric supercar from the premium echelons of the Volkswagen Group. The Audi e-tron GTR will feature an aluminium monocoque chassis and will be based on the Taycan's J1 platform.
The aluminium monocoque chassis should help the new Audi supercar keep its weight down, which should allow it to easily sprint off the line with Car Magazine claiming that talk around Ingolstadt talk about a 0–100km/h time of just over 2.0 seconds, which should put it in current hypercar sprinting territory. Helping the Audi e-tron electric supercar achieve those hypercar levels of acceleration will be an all-wheel-drive setup, which with this car set to bear the five rings badge on its nose, will be bear the Quattro branding.
No other details have been revealed about Audi's electric supercar which will arrive by around 2022.
DriveSpark's Thoughts On The Audi e-Tron GTR
The switch to an electric supercar was imminent and Audi had tried to go down this road with the R8 e-tron before. While we will miss the sonorous V10 soundtrack, the increase in performance with the electric motors should hopefully keep the doubters at bay when the new e-tron GTR arrives in 2022.
