Audi Q2 India-Launch Expected. Here's Why
As of September 2018, the import norms in India allow carmakers to yearly import 2500 homologation-free vehicles. Earlier, the import rules demanded having a Freight on Board (FOB) value of at least US $40,000. And, an engine capacity of 3,000cc for petrol and 2,500cc for diesel.
In simple terms, car makers need not worry meeting Indian road worthiness testing norms. And now, only requires a certification done at the country of origin. The import law furthermore allows carmakers to bring in their low or higher segments and carry out testing and scrutinise the market acceptance.
Audi India, is looking to leverage this scheme and import vehicles. Audi India's Head of Operation, Rahil Ansari, has said, "We will definitely bring one or the other car under this scheme because this will give us the ability to see what the market acceptance is in any segment for the future local investment or assembly. And, the Q2 is one of those that fit under the scheme." Mr. Ansari also revealed that Audi plans to launch 3 models: R8, Q8 and A8 in the second half of the year.

Globally, the Q2 gets multiple engine and transmission options. For India, the Q2 will come in petrol and diesel engines, although it is not sure, which one of the three petrol and two diesel engines on offer, will make it to India.
DriveSpark Thinks
Audi introducing the Q2, might get arch-rival BMW to launch the X2. Your thoughts? And, is the new import scheme an unfair competition for local carmakers, and is it against the spirit of Make in India?
