Volvo Cars Stops Development Of Diesel Engines — Opts For An All-Out Electrification Strategy
Volvo Cars stops development of diesel engines. Opts for an all-out electrification strategy. The new S60 sedan will be the first diesel free offering from Volvo
Volvo Cars have committed to an all-out electrification strategy for its future. The company's upcoming S60 sedan will be their first offering to be produced without the option of a diesel engine.
Volvo Cars were the first car maker to commit to an all-out electrification strategy in 2017. As part of this, all Volvo cars from 2019 will only be available in petrol hybrid versions. This includes mild petrol hybrid, plug-in petrol hybrid or as a completely electric vehicle.
Hakan Samuelsson, President & Chief Executive, Volvo Cars, stated, "Our future is electric and we will no longer develop a new generation of diesel engines."
He further added, "We will phase-out cars with only an internal combustion engine, with petrol hybrid versions as a transitional option as we move towards full electrification. The new S60 represents the next step in that commitment."
The Volvo S60 is a mid-size sports sedan offering from the company. The new generation of the S60 is expected to launch later this year. The sedan is part of Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), similar to the ones on its new 60 and 90 series offerings. The siblings of the S60, the S60 Estate and the V60 was launched earlier this year at Stockholm.
Initially, the new Volvo S60 sedan will be available with a range of four-cylinder Drive-E petrol engines. The sedan will also feature two plug-in hybrid petrol versions. There will also be a mild-hybrid version for the sedan, which is expected to launch at a later stage.
The production of the new Volvo S60 sedan will take place exclusively in their new manufacturing plant at Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The sedan will be exported worldwide from its US plant, apart from being sold in the US market as well.
For the Indian market, the Volvo S60 is available in three trims, the S60, S60 Cross Country and the S60 Polestar. Volvo India is also set to launch its new XC40 in India by July 2018. The new SUV offering from Volvo will take on the Mercedes-Benz GLA and the BMW X1 in India.
Thoughts On The Volvo Cars All-Out Electrification
Volvo Cars reinforced its strategy for all-out electrification at the 2018 Beijing Auto Expo. Volvo is aiming for fully electric cars to make up for 50 percent of its global sales by 2025. Positioning itself as the main player in China, which is currently the world's leading market for electric cars.
