Volkswagen Recalls Three Of Its India Models; States ‘Necessary Updates’ As The Reason

Volkswagen India has issued a public notice for a recall of its Polo GT, Vento and Jetta model in the country. According to the notice all three models manufactured between April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2017 will be recalled for 'necessary updates'.

Volkswagen although hasn't confirmed the exact number of cars affected. The recall includes all 1.5-litre models of the Polo GT and Vento with a manual transmission.

The company has also recalled the 1.4-litre TSI Jetta model for a replacement of its O-rings in the carbon canister. This is to pass the Conformity of Production (COP) process, as agreed with ARAI. The carbon canister is used to absorb fuel vapour to prevent air pollution.

Previously, on the 1st April 2016, the company had to recall 3,877 Vento cars carrying the 1.5-litre diesel engine and the manual gearbox. This was after the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) found higher than permissible levels of Carbon monoxide emissions.

The inconsistently high carbon monoxide emission levels caused the immediate halt in sales of the model.

Volkswagen was also involved in a ‘diesel-gate' scandal in December 2015. This was when a government-ordered probe found a device used by EA 189 diesel engines to cheat on its emission tests.

During this scandal, Volkswagen announced the recall of 3.4 lakh models sold between 2008 and November 2015. This included cars from its various brands including Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda.
