Vazirani Shul — India’s First Electric Hypercar (Comes With Some Rocket Science Too)

Vazirani Automotive has unveiled the first official Indian electric hypercar at Goodwood Festival Of Speed – the Shul. The hypercar is powered by an 'eco-friendly' turbine-electric powertrain; something of a rarity in cars. The Shul (pronounced as 'Shool') also makes use of a lightweight chassis, showered with lots of carbon fibre.

The hypercar also looks the part with its edgy-styling and functional aero. Vazirani Automotive was developed with inputs from the Formula 1 team – Force India.

Co-founder and Chief Designer of Vazirani Automotive, Chunky Vazirani told Autocar UK that he wanted to make something "more emotional" than conventional electric cars since he himself was a "true petrolhead". He also added that the Shul will showcase blistering performance without compromising too much on range.

The car is essentially all-wheel-drive with four individual motors for each wheel; hence enabling torque vectoring. The motors run on a single-ratio gearbox and Vazirani states that the Shul offers a wide band of power and doesn't require a second cog.

As mentioned earlier, the car has undergone extensive lightweighting, from a carbon-fibre tub to a minimal-drag design.

"Our battery pack weighs only about 300kg and it gives you the advantage of charging it on the go," Chunky shared. "The battery is right behind the passenger and it also takes some space through the central tunnel, so the car has an optimum weight distribution" – he added.

No technical specifications have been shared yet. But the company has stated that they won't be going after 0-100km/h times but will concentrate more on handling; evident from the Michelin and Brembo products on the car.

Working Of A Turbine-Electric Powertrain In Brief

The system, as the name suggests, employs a micro-turbine to charge the battery pack. The battery in turn powers the wheels. The main aim of this is to reduce the need for extra batteries which add a lot to the weight of an electric car. Usually, jet fuel is needed to run a turbine engine. But Vazirani developed the engine in partnership with a UK-based company to make it run on regular petrol too. This makes the hypercar more usable in real-life.

Although Vazirani Automotive is essentially a car company with Indian roots, the car was designed and developed in California. The team plans to locate their production facility in California since it is the "capital of the electric car world." Chunky Vazirani also told – "We want this to be a story of India, but we can't build it here yet so will build it elsewhere."

The unveiling of the Vazirani Shul was quite a surprise to automotive enthusiasts, especially Indians. Goodwood Festival Of Speed has always been a venue for manufacturers to unveil their performance products. However, nobody expected a small Indian brand to unveil a hypercar, that too which works on a turbine-electric powertrain. In fact, all the global media are talking about the Shul; something we Indians can be proud of.
