More Tesla Semi Truck News Prior To Launch — The EV Truck Has A Range Of Almost 1000 Kilometres
Entrepreneur and businessman, Elon Musk unveiled the Tesla Semi truck to the world in November 2017. The Tesla Semi is the brand's first venture in the commercial transport segment. The Semi boasts of benchmarking levels of acceleration, compared to a regular IC-engined trailer truck. The Semi will be launched sometime in 2019.
Now more details of the Tesla Semi truck has surfaced on the internet. While the truck was initially claimed to have a range of 805kms on a single charge, new reports suggest that the Tesla Semi can travel 966kms on a full charge.
If that is the case, the Tesla Semi will revolutionise cargo transport by road. Today, diesel cargo trucks are widely used to haul goods between places. They use a lot of diesel and cause a considerable amount of emissions in the long run too. The ‘clean' Tesla Semi can also help in reducing the rising oil demand since a large part of fossil fuel is used in the commercial segment.
In addition to this, the Tesla Semi truck has a towing capacity of 36 tonnes (36,287kg to be exact). What is even more interesting is that the heavy-duty vehicle ‘under full-load' can reach 100km/h from a standstill in just around 20 seconds. While that doesn't seem much on paper, it is supercar levels in the trucking world.
In comparison, a conventional diesel semi truck takes more than 60 seconds to do the same.
Under no-load conditions, the Tesla can do a 0-100km/h run in just five seconds; still almost 10 seconds faster than a diesel truck.
The Tesla Semi uses the same four electric motors found in the range-topping Model S P100D. In fact, the Tesla Semi truck also has a lesser drag coefficient at 0.36 than the Bugatti Chiron's 0.38.
The Tesla Semi can attain a range of 643km in just 30 minutes using the upcoming Tesla Mega Chargers.
The all-electric truck features a unique driving experience with the central driving seatand a minimal and modern cabin design. The Tesla Semi also gets AutoPilot – The brand's semi-autonomous driving system.
Other highlights include the armoured glass capable of resisting even a nuclear explosion (Elon Musk actually stated that) and the jackknifing*-free wheel-motor configuration.
*Jackknifing refers to the tendency of a track and its trailer to lock into a ‘V' formation when it loses traction.
The Tesla Semi will be sold in two variants based on range:
- 966km Range – 180,000 dollars (Rs 1.21 crore)
- 483km Range – 150,000 dollars (Rs 1.01 crore)
Thoughts On The Tesla Semi Truck
The Tesla Semi is something we really look forward to. While the idea of electric cars taking over proper driver-focussed IC-engined cars seems disturbing to us enthusiasts, an emission-free efficient alternative to cargo transport is something we wouldn't mind.
However, do keep in mind that Tesla models also cost a bomb when it comes to battery-replacement or other critical failure.
If you are wondering whether Tesla Semi trucks would come to India, the infrastructure to support such electric transport is still in the basic stage.
