Auto Expo 2018: Tata Tiago EV And Tigor EV Showcased; Expected Launch Date & Price, Specs & Features
Tata Tiago EV And Tigor EV Showcased at Auto Expo 2018.
Tata Tiago EV and Tigor EV showcased at Auto Expo 2018. Tata Motors has been developing electric vehicle technology with its R&D centre in the UK and the carmaker has been making considerable strides in the recent past with the Tiago EV, more recently with the Tigor EV. However, this is the first time that Tata Motors has displayed its EV prowess in India at the Auto Expo 2018 with the electric version of the Tiago hatchback and Tigor subcompact sedan.
Both the Tiago and the Tigor EV look similar to the regular model which are available in petrol and diesel guise. That said, the Tiago and the Tigor EV are unique with the addition of blue decals on the side and 'EV' badging on the front grille. Also, on the inside, there is a knob instead of the gear stick. That's the only difference between the electric and internal combustion engine models of the Tiago and the Tigor.
The most significant difference is the powertrain. The Tiago EV and the Tigor EV draw power from an electric drive system developed and supplied by Electrica EV. Both the Tata EVs draw power from a three-phase AC induction motor which produces close to 40bhp. However, Tata Motors has not revealed the driving range and the charging time.
The Tiago EV and the Tigor EV will be manufactured at Tata's Sanand plant. Tata Motors has bagged an order to supply electric vehicles to EESL, and the first set of 350 EVs have been delivered. Tata is expected to launch the Tiago EV and the Tigor EV later this year and is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 10 lakh and more.
Thoughts About Tata Tiago EV And Tigor EV
With EV segment witnessing an unprecedented focus in the last couple of years, car buyers are apprehensive about the prices of electric cars and bikes. The apprehension is justifiable as the cost to develop the technology is significantly high which results in the higher pricing of an EV.
Tata Motors have believed in affordable commuter vehicles and the approach towards bringing mainstream vehicles like Tiago and Tigor into the electric segment will help cut cost and eventually price the cars at a competitive price.
