Tata Nano Production Stopped — To Be Manufactured On Order Basis
Tata Nano, India's cheapest car was launched almost ten years ago, and it was an ambitious project of Ratan Tata, the Chairman of Tata Group. Previously, we had reported that the production of the Tata Nano might be stopped. Now, Bloomberg reports that Tata Motors has halted the production of the small car.
Yes, Tata Motors has stopped the production of Nano due to the poor sales and the company produced only one unit of the car in June 2018. In June 2017, 275 units of Tata Nano were produced. But Tata Motors will manufacture the Nano on an order-to-order basis.
But it does not mean that the Nano will survive for long. Tata Motors might officially retire the small car if the demand drops in the coming months. Customers can still buy a Nano by placing an order through the nearest dealership, similar to a high-end car.
In September 2017, Tata Motors had stated that it will continue the production of Nano as it has an emotional connection with the project. Currently, the Tata Nano is priced in the range of Rs 2.25 lakh to Rs 3.20 lakh and it is the most affordable car in India and the world. The Nano is also offered with an AMT gearbox.
But Tata Motors has said that the Nano has not been discontinued in India. A spokesperson said, "Nano has been an iconic car reflecting the innovative spirit of the company and its leaders. Decisions on product life cycle is a holistic view taken after considering the market developments, regulations and emerging competitive landscape."
Previously it was reported that Tata Motors is working on a new project to turn the fortunes of the Nano. Tata Motors is expected to introduce the electric version of the Nano to inject a new life into the small car. It looks like Tata Motors is not willing to give up on Nano as it is more than a car for the Indian automaker.
Thoughts On The Tata Nano Production
Tata Nano has been a loss-making project for Tata Motors and the demand dropped drastically in the past few years. But the Indian automaker still continues to produce the car as it has an emotional attachment with the car. But now it looks like Tata Motors will finally retire the Nano if the situation does not improve. What are your thoughts on the Nano? Do let us know in the comments section below.
