Tata Motors Might Stop Production Of The Nano — Just One Unit Produced In June 2018

Tata Nano production might stop soon. Tata Motors has not yet taken a decision regarding the future of the Nano hatchback.

Tata Nano production down to just one unit in June 2018. Rumours of Tata Motors stopping production of the Nano has started doing the rounds. However, the company states that they have yet to decide the future of the Nano.

The company produced just one unit in the month of June, compared to 275 units in the same month last year. Domestic sales were down to three units from 167 in June 2017.

Tata Motors also reported that no units of the Nano were exported in June 2018. However, during the same time last year, the company shipped 25 units of the Nano.

The spokesperson for Tata Motors, stated, "We are well aware that the Nano in its present form cannot continue beyond 2019 and may need fresh investments to survive. No decision has been made yet in this regard."

He further stated that the Nano will continue to be inproduction while catering to the demand in key markets.

The Tata Nano was first showcased at the 2008 Auto Expo. While it was launched in March 2009.

Ratan Tata, Former Chairman, Tata Sons, showcased the Nano at the 2008 Auto expo. Initially, the car was priced at Rs 1 lakh, with Ratan Tata stating that "a promise is a promise".

The current generation hatchback, the GenX Nano is powered by a 624cc, two-cylinder petrol engine. It produces 37bhp and 51Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to either a four-speed manual gearbox or an AMT.

The Tata Nano caused a lot of problems, right from the start. The company had planned to open a new production unit in Singur, West Bengal. However, they shifted production to their Sanand plant in Gujarat. The shift in production was caused due to the heavy protests by farmers in Singur against the company's land acquisition.

Soon after the launch, a number of incidents of the car catching fire surfaced. These incidents further added to the problems for Tata Motors. Ratan Tata at one point even admitted the mistake of marketing the Nano as ‘the cheapest car'.

Cyrus Mistry, ex-chairman, Tata Sons, claimed that the company did not stop production of the Nano earlier, due to ‘emotional reasons'. Although, the Nano was a ‘loss-making model' for the company.

Tata Motors launched India's cheapest car, the Nano back in 2009. Since then, the hatchback has had its fair share of problems. The sales of the Nano has been on the decline over the past few years, despite many revisions from the company.
