Brake Disc Wiping

Brake Disc Wiping is a relatively common yet unknown safety feature in modern cars. In wet driving conditions, braking efficiency would decrease a bit since the pads have to clear all the water content, before coming in contact with the disc or rotors.

Brake Disc Wiping works in conjunction with ABS and the windshield wipers. When the wipers are activated, the ABS slightly applies pressure to the pads (in regular intervals); thus removing the water layer without slowing down the vehicle.

Corner Stability Control (CSC)

Also called Cornering Brake Control, the system uses ABS to apply brakes ‘asymmetrically' when the vehicle is taking corners. For instance, when the vehicle takes a right turn (moderately fast), the load acts on the outer or left wheels.

If the brakes are applied normally, the rear axle will undergo more stress and hence, CSC distributes the braking force between the inner and outer wheels.

Traction Control System (TCS)

Traction control is becoming more common these days, and since the Tata Harrier will be priced from 16 – 21 lakh on-road, most of its rivals also have it. The system cuts down the power (by braking and differential/transaxle action) of the wheel which loses traction (spins on slippery terrain) and thereby helps it regain grip.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP)

ESP is an improved version of traction control and helps the driver regain steering control, if the car swerves to a side beyond his/her intention; or more simply, if the car is going to crash. TCS cuts the engine power and also brakes the wheels if required.

Traction control just limits wheelspin, but stability control can help direct the car.

Roll Over Mitigation

The system uses a rotation sensor to detect the amount of roll or tilt the vehicle is undergoing. If the tilt is beyond the permissible value or the vehicle is going to tip over, the system uses the TCS to brake the wheels in a way to prevent the rollover.
