Tata Motors is all set to launch their new premium SUV, the Harrier in India by January 2019. The company was initially expected to source its engine and transmission from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). However, recent reports from Autocar India suggest the company will be sourcing the transmission system from Hyundai Motors.

According to insiders from Tata Motors, the nine-speed gearbox from FCA proved too expensive for the Harrier project. Hence Tata Motors has decided to opt for the more cost-effective six-speed automatic from Hyundai.

The Tata Harrier SUV will still, however, be powered by the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine. This engine is capable of producing 140bhp and 320Nm of torque.

The six-speed automatic gearbox will be used on both the five-seater Harrier SUV and its seven-seater sibling. The unnamed seven-seater 170bhp sibling of the Harrier is expected to be launched at a later stage. Both SUVs will also feature Tata Motors' all-wheel-drive system as standard.

The six-speed automatic transmission is currently used on the Tucson SUV, apart from many other models in Hyundai's portfolio.

Sources from Tata Motors also stated that the six-speed gearbox will be well suited for the torque and power output from the Fiat-sourced gearbox used by the Harrier SUV. The transmission system from Hyundai is also more cost-effective, compared to one offered by FCA.

The nine-speed gearbox from FCA, however, will make its Indian debut with the Jeep Compass Trailhawk. The new version of the Compass SUV, the Trailhawk is expected to be introduced in India, later this year.

The inside, though camouflaged, is expected to receive a host of premium features. Some of the expected features include a multi-function steering wheel, touchscreen infotainment system and MID on the instrument cluster.
