Supreme Court Orders To Ban 15-Year-Old Petrol And 10-Year-Old Diesel Vehicles
With the increasing pollution and deteriorating air quality, the Supreme Court has directed the transport department to impound 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The Supreme Court has termed the current situation of the pollution in the Delhi-NCR region as ‘very critical.' The court also directed to publish the list of 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and transport department websites.
The bench consisting of Madan B Lokur, S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta has also asked for an advertisement to be published in the newspapers. The bench also directed CPCB to create a social media account to enable the citizens to lodge a complaint about pollution.
The Supreme Court also permitted the court-mandated Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) to take preventive action under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). GRAP is aimed at tackling air-pollution in Delhi-NCR and surrounding areas and it can take urgent remedial action when the air quality deteriorates.
Previously, the National Green Tribunal had banned the 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles in the Delhi-NCR. The apex court had also rejected a plea against NGT's order of banning 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles.
Thoughts On Ban On Old Petrol And Diesel Vehicles
The old petrol and diesel vehicles are one of the biggest reason for the increase in air pollution. The quality of air is also deteriorating day-by-day and now, the Supreme Court has announced a crucial judgement by banning the 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles in the Delhi-NCR region.
