Nitin Gadkari To Abolish Speed Governors On Commercial Vehicles
Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari spoke about abolishing Speed Governors entirely from commercial vehicles.
The central government will be abolishing the mandatory rule of speed governors on commercial vehicles. The Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari spoke about the abolishment at the 58th SIAM Annual Convention held today (6th September 2018).
Speed Governors were made mandatory by the Karnataka High Court, last May. The rule was passed to improve road safety. However, the order faced a lot of criticism from the transport department.
Gadkari, during the annual convention, did mention that the rule will be abolished, although, no details as to its timeline were revealed. Hence, until an official announcement has been made, all commercial vehicles will follow the mandatory order of installing speed governors.
Speed Governors are devices which limit the top speed of a vehicle. The change in the regulation will require the government to first update the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to abolish the governors entirely.
Gadkari also announced that all commercial electric vehicles, along with those running on bio-fuel and CNG will be exempt from all permits. This will help such operators to easily enter the market. He also stated that he is working towards making 15 percent of the commercial fleet run by electric vehicles in the next five years.
At present, the speed governors restrict the top speed on buses and taxis to 80km/h. The top speed on trucks is set to 60km/h, while three-wheelers and school buses have a restricted top speed of 40km/h.
During the convention, Gadkari also spoke about introducing advanced driver assistance systems as compulsory features in India by 2022. Also, the government has already made other features such as dual front airbags, ABS and reverse parking sensors mandatory in all vehicles from 2019.
The new vehicles will also come with seatbelt reminders and a speed reminder which start beeping, once after crossing 80km/h and again at 120km/h.
Thoughts On Abolishing Speed Governors
The Speed Governors on commercial vehicles was introduced by the Karnataka High Court in order to improve road safety. However, after facing stiff criticism, the Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari has decided to abolish the rule. Although, the rule will continue to be followed until an official announcement has been made.
