New Volkswagen T-Cross Compact-SUV Teased: Rivals The Hyundai Creta

Volkswagen has teased their new compact-SUV, the T-Cross. Supposedly a Hyundai Creta-rival, the Volkswagen T-Cross was first showcased as a concept at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. Once launched, the T-Cross will be the most affordable product in the brand's SUV lineup which includes the T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Touareg.

The renders show a neat-looking five-seater following Volkswagen's latest design language. The headlamps merge into the chrome horizontal slat grille. There is an embossing front skid plate which also forms the base of the fog lamp housing.

The side profile carries all the design traits seen in the other Volkswagen SUVs – sharp lines and minimal cuts. Obviously, the final version of the T-Cross will sport smaller-sized wheels. We expect it to ride on 16-inch alloy wheels.

At the rear, the T-Cross will have LED tail lamps, an equally-prominent skid plate as at the front and a sleek spoiler.

But as usual, expect the production version to look quite different compared to the concept.

The Volkswagen T-Cross measures 4107mm in length, making it shorter than the Hyundai Creta (4270mm) and longer than the Ford EcoSport (3998mm). The T-Cross is also just 54mm lengthier than the Volkswagen Polo.

The compact-SUV will be based on the brand's MQB platform.

No news has been shared as to what power plants the T-Cross will be available with. However, expect it to come powered by Volkswagen's 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit or the 1.5-litre diesel unit; both tuned specifically for the T-Cross. The engines will be mated to a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG automatic.

Reports also suggest that the Volkswagen T-Cross will strictly be a front-wheel-drive. But foreign markets might get an all-wheel-drive variant.

While there are no official statements as to when it will reach Indian shores, the Volkswagen T-Cross is expected to be globally unveiled later this year. Based on the proportions and specifications, the T-Cross seems to be a fitting compact-SUV for the Indian market.

Thoughts On The Upcoming Volkswagen T-Cross SUV

Volkswagen India does not have a strong contender in the compact-SUV market in India – one of the most successful categories in the country. The cheapest SUV the brand sells in India is the Tiguan; a rather premium offering. If the T-Cross makes its way to India, it will surely contribute a lot to Volkswagen India's sales figure.
