Skoda has begun testing the new 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine in India. The new 1.0-litre engine was spied testing on the company's C-segment sedan, the Rapid.
This new engine is expected to power all the upcoming cars from the Skoda and Volkswagen brand, especially the ones part of the MQB AO platform. This includes the Vento, Rapid and all compact SUV offerings from both the brands in India.
The new engine will replace the current range of petrol and diesel units available in the market. Skoda is also planning to localise the new engine, reducing its production and maintenance costs.
The new 1.0-litre engine is a three-cylinder turbocharged unit. This engine will be tuned to produce a maximum of 115bhp and 200Nm of torque. The new power unit is expected to be offered with both manual and automatic transmission options.
The new engine is also expected to be compatible with the hybrid technology. This will allow the new engines to continue, even after the BS-VI emission norms come into effect by April 2020. Skoda will then discontinue their other petrol and diesel engine, currently in use.
Skoda has also been put in charge of model development for Volkswagen in India. The company, under the ‘India 2.0 Project' will be responsible for developing their new MQB AO platform.
The new platform will underpin all future Volkswagen and Skoda cars from 2020. Skoda also announced that their first model, with the new platform, will be launched in 2020. The new SUV with the MQB AO platform will be based on their Vision X concept.
Thoughts On The New 1.0-litre Engine From Skoda
The new 1.0-litre engine from Skoda is said to be lighter and more compact, offering a smooth driving experience and better fuel-efficiency. The new engine will be introduced in the Indian market soon, while also powering all of Volkswagen and Skoda cars in the future.
