Mercedes-Benz GLE 2019 Unveiled: German luxury car manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the 2019 version of the GLE. The SUV will be showcased to the public at 2018 Paris Motor Show. The new version of the GLE comes with updated styling and a host of new feature additions.

Starting with the design, the new Mercedes-Benz has failed to impress Merc fans with its dull-looking exterior. This is not the first time the brand's Sensual Purity design philosophy has shifted from sharp aesthetics to a more rounded approach.

The new GLE is noticeably less on ‘edginess' but this could reflect in better aerodynamics. The grille has got a pair of chunky slats while the headlamps flowmore on to the fenders. The bumper design is somewhat similar to all the upcoming off-roaders from the brand including their pickup — the X-Class.

The side profile still retains the iconic thick forward-slanted C-pillar which is a distinct design feature of the GLE or the previous ML. Compared to the older model, the character lines are much more subtle. There are some chrome highlights underneath and around the windows.

The 2019 GLE is longer than before and is offered with an optional third-row seating for the first time.

At the rear, the LED tail lamps wrap the rear quarter more and are narrower. The roofline dips down further into the rear windshield and the overall design is minimal. There are two exhaust outlets but chances are high from them to end up being fake garnishes in lower engine variants.

The interiors have received a complete revamp and include two 12.3-inch displays which come as standard. The steering wheels have soft-touch buttons and the AC vents are now rectangular. The updated infotainment system has got voice recognition and a lot of related functionalities which can be operated via the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). The new Mercedes-Benz GLE also comes with a range of driver-assistance systems too such as Active Tailback Assist.

Coming to the engines, initial reports suggest that the SUV will employ a 3.0-litre inline straight-six petrol engine coupled to a 48V motor, making 362bhp and 500Nm of torque. The existing 2.0-litre diesel, 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.9-litre straight-six diesel engine will also be available. All engines will come mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Thoughts On The New Mercedes-Benz GLE

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE is based on the brand's MHA (Modular High Architecture) platform, which is related to the MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform underpinning the C, E and S-Class saloons. Overall, the new GLE seems to be high on kit but we are not sure about the looks of it. But looks are subjective (as per popular opinion) and the new GLE will be a strong rival to the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Jaguar I-Pace.

The 2019 iteration of the Mercedes-Benz GLE will land in India, sometime next year. In the meantime, do share your thoughts on the latest Merc SUV in the comment section below!
