2019 BMW 8 Series M850i Unveiled — The Ultimate Bavarian Grand Tourer?
2019 BMW 8 Series M850i Unveiled: German luxury car manufacturer, BMW has unveiled the much-awaited 8 Series Coupe. Introduced in the M850i trim, the car was teased several times early this year. A fully-functional prototype was also being tested in the recent past. The new grand tourer is the successor of the BMW 8 Series from the '90s.
The production version of the 2019 BMW 8 Series has not shifted a lot from its concept form, in terms of design.
The kidney grilles have taken a new format, with a connection in-between. The headlamps are sharp and sleek with a DRL cluster in line with the latest BMW models. The bumpers have a mix of elegance and sportiness with the large air dams and eloquent curves. The bonnet has a pair of aerodynamic protrusions too.
Being a grand tourer, the new BMW 8 Series has an elongated side profile. The car can seat two (less-than-average-sized) passengers at the rear too. The car rides on a neat set of 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels (20-inch wheels are also available).
There is also a prominent side vent which lets the air trapped in the wheel well to escape; reducing drag thereby.
At the rear, the GT gets wide LED tail lamps. The rearvisuals are further enhanced with the bold bumper design and the air vents on it. The rhombic exhaust outlets also go well with the overall design.
BMW has also confirmed the more ‘insane' version of the 8 Series - the M8. The M8 will surely look the part to justify its performance capabilities.
Inside, the new 8 Series gets all the tech and features you would ever want; in good company with leather, chrome and silver details. Of course, there will be a lot of options for you to customise the interiors with.
The M850i gets a fully-digital instrument cluster, heads-up display, haptic feedback buttons, optional 1375W Bowers & Wilkins sound system and even NFC (Near Field Communications). Through NFC, you can use your smartphone to lock, unlock and even start the car.
The new 8 Series also has a host driving and safety aids to set the benchmark high.
Powering the 2019 BMW 8 Series Coupe is the familiar 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, but tuned to make 523bhp and 750Nm of torque. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The car is also equipped with the brand's xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
Altogether, the BMW M850i gets a claimed 0-100km/h time of 3.6 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h.
Thoughts On The New BMW 8 Series Coupe
‘Bimmer' fans consider the new BMW M850i as a reincarnation of the original E31 8 Series Coupe. It was produced between 1989 and 1999 and was an icon of the past. The new model will be BMW's flagship grand tourer, aimed to take on the Mercedes S-Class Coupe, Aston Martin DB11 and the GT class in general.
For those who want a bit less, there will also be straight-six diesel-powered BMW 840d xDrive. Both models are expected to launch by Q1 2019.
