2018 Detroit Auto Show: Mercedes G-Class Unveiled. The all-new Mercedes G-Class features revised interiors but looks the same from the outside.

German carmaker Mercedes-Benz has revealed the all-new G-Class SUV at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. The new Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen will go on sale in Europe in the coming months.

The new 2018 Mercedes G-Class is longer and wider than ever before which Mercedes claims has freed up more space on the inside of the SUV which it also states is more comfortable than before. The German carmaker claims that its new G-Wagen SUV is more capable than before both on and off the road.

The new Mercedes G-Class was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show in G500 form and is expected to receive a diesel engine and more powerful AMG models, the latter of which is expected to arrive at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in March.

The new G-Class is also expected to get electrified as Mercedes like its rivals looks to make its entire lineup go green in the near future.

The new G500 shown at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 416bhp and 610Nm of torque at 610 Nm at 2000 to 4750 rpm. The new G-Wagen's front axle sits 270mm above the ground while the rear axle sits 241mm above the tarmac.

The new G-Class has a slope climbing ability of up to 100 percent on suitable surfaces while the maximum fording depth has increased by 100mm to 700mm. The new G-Class is now stable at lean angles of up to 35 degrees which is seven degrees more than the previous-gen SUV.

The angle of approach, departure and the break-over angle have all increased by one degree to 30, 31 and 26 degrees respectively. The off-roading capabilities are helped by the addition of adaptive damping which allows for a new specialised 'G-Mode' for off-roading.

In terms of looks, the exterior of the new G-Class is almost a carbon copy of the previous gen SUV, however, the new car is now 53mm longer and 121mm wider than before.

Mercedes has also integrated the front and rear bumper along with the wheel arches to the rest of the SUV in a much more seamless way than before so that they look more like an integrant part of the G-Class instead of last-minute bolt-ons.

The interiors of the new 2018 Mercedes G-Class unlike the exterior of the SUV see changes that go more than just skin deep. For passengers in the front - shoulder, elbow and knee room have increased by 38,68 and 38mm respectively. For the passengers in the rear seat, leg room is up by a massive 150mm while shoulder and elbow room have increased by 27 and 56mm respectively.

While the new G-Class comes with analogue dials as standard, customers can opt to replace the instrument binnacle and the regular infotainment screen with dual 12.3-inch displays seen on the E & S-Class sedans. The new G-Class retains the iconic grab handle for the front passenger, though the vents for the climate control system look more in sync with the rest of the Merc lineup.

With the added space inside, Mercedes has solved one of the biggest complaints regarding the G-Wagen, which could see even more customers flock to the blocky old-school looks of the SUV.
