Mercedes-Benz Planning To Manufacture Electric Cars In India
Mercedes-Benz is working on a plan to start manufacture of its electric cars in its Chakan plant, Pune.
Mercedes-Benz is planning to manufacture electric vehicles at its Chakan plant, Pune.
With the Indian government taking multiple steps towards green mobility, the company feels that India will emerge as a key market for EVs in the coming years.
According to TOI, Mercedes-Benz will start production of electric vehicles, along with its combustion engines at its Chakan plant, Pune.
However, the company still faces challenges in terms of a robust ‘eco-system'. This includes the government improving the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in the country.
Also, the government could also lower the import duties of clean cars in the country. This would help encourage car brands to invest in manufacturing in the country. The lowering of import duties on EVs will also help launch EVs in India at a reasonable price.
Mercedes-Benz is planning to globally launch its new sub-brand, the EQ next year. The sub-brand already has a strong lineup of electric cars, set to be introduced in the market.
According to Mercedes-Benz, its EQ portfolio will comprise all future battery-electric cars, along with any associated products.
The EQ portfolio will be based on a new single architecture platform. This platform will be scalable and used across all-electric vehicle model.
India's largest luxury car maker, Mercedes-Benz was also the first to introduce a BS-VI compliant vehicle in the country. The company, part of the Daimler Group launched the S-Class recently in India.
Thoughts On Mercedes-Benz Electric Car Manufacture In India
The start of electric vehicle manufacturing, by a large brand like Daimler, will be a boost for India. It will directly strengthen the government's efforts for plans for green mobility in the country. It will also help bring in investment from other companies in the country.
