German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz is planning to expand its product portfolio in the Indian market. According to a report from TOI, Mercedes-Benz is considering the V-Class luxury van for India. The Mercedes-Benz V-Class will be targeted towards fleet customers.

VP for Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz India, Michael Jopp stated that the company has begun to evaluate the V-Class van for India as importing new vehicles have become easier due to the new rules. He also said that Mercedes-Benz is assessing the market situation for vans.

With the introduction of the V-Class vans in India, Mercedes-Benz will target the fleet operators and luxury hotel chains seeking a luxurious vehicle to transport their guests. As standard, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class comes with a six-seater layout. But the van can accommodate a maximum of eight people with two bench seats.

The Mercedes-Benz V-Class is available in three lengths: Compact (4,895mm), Long (5,140mm) and Extra-Long (5,370mm). The V-Class van comes with a host of features such as electric sliding doors, panoramic sunroof, Thermotronic climate control system, heated and ventilated seats with lumbar support.

The rear centre console of the Mercedes-Benz V-Class also features a 5-litre cooling compartment and thermal cup holders. The V-Class van draws power from a 2-litre diesel and a 2-litre petrol engine. The diesel engine is offered with three different power options.

The transmission options on the V-Class van include a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The V-Class van comes with a front-wheel-drive configuration and the all-wheel-drive is offered with the optional 4MATIC AWD system. But India is expected to get the front-wheel-drive model.

With the relaxed import rules, Mercedes-Benz is planning to introduce the V-Class van in India as the manufacturers are allowed to import 2,500 units of cars/bikes to India without homologation. The V-Class van will come to India via CBU route.

Mercedes-Benz is all set to experiment with a niche product in the Indian market due to the revised import rules. The Mercedes-Benz V-Class van will be targeted towards fleet operators and luxury hotel chains. The Mercedes-Benz V-Class is expected to be priced between Rs 40 lakh to Rs 48.5 lakh ex-showroom.
