2018 Detroit Auto Show: Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 & E 53 Unveiled
2018 Detroit Auto Show: Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 & E 53 Coupe & Cabriolet revealed. The new 53 lineup from AMG sees the performance wing of Mercedes go hybrid with mainstream Merc models.
German carmaker Mercedes Benz has revealed the new AMG CLS 53 & E 53 Coupe and Cabriolet at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. The new 53 lineup of Mercedes-AMG cars sees the performance wing of the Stuttgart based carmaker implement hybrid technology in a production car for the first time.
The new Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 & E63 Coupe and Cabriolet are powered by an all-new 3.0-litre straight-six engine fitted with a traditional exhaust gas turbocharger along with a new 48V electric compressor.
The new turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine kicks out 429bhp @ 6,100rpm and 520Nm @ 1,800-5,800rpm. The new hybrid turbo engine is also boosted by an electric starter-generator which adds another 21bhp and 250Nm of torque for brief periods of time. The starter-generator also provides electric energy for the 48V electric system used by the new cars.

The new hybrid engine of the AMG 53 lineup is mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox which sends power to all four wheels through Merc's '4Matic+ four-wheel drive system. The new 53 lineup gets air suspension which features three modes — Comfort. Sport or Sport+. The cars also feature five driving modes, which change the responses of the engine, gearbox and the steering.
The E 53 Coupe is the fastest of the new Mercedes-AMG 53 lineup and sprints from 0–100kph in just 4.4 seconds. The E 53 Cabriolet and the CLS 53 are a tenth of a second slower to 100kph at 4.5 seconds. All three cars are electronically limited to a top speed of 250kph, however, the limiter can be raised to 270kph by selecting the AMG Driver's package.
To differentiate the new 53 lineup from the regular CLS and E-Class coupe and cabriolet, the new models feature the twin-blade grille traditionally seen on V8-powered AMGs along with revised front and rear bumpers along with wider side sills and chromed quad exhausts.
Inside, the three cars get bespoke design tweaks including sports seats featuring unique upholstery, red seat belts, carbon-fibre or silver glass-fibre trim detailing and the AMG Performance steering wheel, which features touch panels that control the infotainment system.
Owners can also replace the regular instrument binnacle and infotainment display with a set of 12.3-inch displays that sit next to each other. These display can be controlled by swiping on the aforementioned touch panels on the AMG Performance steering wheel and owners can customise exactly what information they want the screens to show.

The arrival of the new Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 & E 53 models sees yet another bastion of internal combustion join the electrified era. However, in typical AMG fashion, the performance wing of Mercedes has used the green tech to give its cars, in the immortal words of Jeremy Clarkson —(more) Powerrrr.
