Maruti Omni To Be Discontinued In India

The Maruti Omni has been in the Indian market for quite some time and now Maruti Suzuki is planning to discontinue the iconic van. Yes, CarandBike reports that Maruti Suzuki will axe the Omni as it will not be able to comply with the Bharat New Vehicles Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP) which will come into effect from October 2020.

Chairman of Maruti Suzuki, R C Bhargava said that there are certain models that cannot comply with the upcoming safety norms and the Omni is one among them. He said that similar to the Maruti 800, the company will also discontinue the Maruti Omni.

The front fascia of the Maruti Omni is flat and it lacks the structural integrity to comply with the new crash test regulations. The Maruti Omni cannot be fitted with crumple zones to absorb the impact during a collision. So, Maruti Suzuki has decided to discontinue the Omni.

Other models that do not comply with the new safety norms are the Maruti Eeco van and the Alto 800. Bhargava also said that the company is working on both the cars to make them ready to meet the new safety norms. He also said that it will require extensive development to make both the models safer.

The Maruti Omni draws power from a 796cc three-cylinder engine that produces 34bhp and 59Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 4-speed gearbox. The Maruti Omni was launched back in 1984 and the van received its first update in 1998. In 2005, Maruti Suzuki introduced another update for the Omni with new features.
