Exclusive: Mahindra U321 MPV Spotted Testing In Chennai
Mahindra has been testing the U321 MPV for quite some time on Indian roads.
Mahindra & Mahindra is readying its new MPV codenamed as U321 and has been testing the vehicle for quite some time. Now, we have spotted the Mahindra U321 MPV being tested on GST highway in Chennai. The spotted model still bears a heavily camouflaged livery.
The only design elements which are visible are the front grille, headlamps, fog lamps, air dam and the tail light cluster. The front fascia of the spotted model features a typical MPV silhouette with an eight-slat chrome grille, projector headlamps, fog lamps and LED daytime running lights on the bumper.
The rear of the Mahindra MPV features a vertically stacked tail light cluster and also gets a high-mount stop lamp. The bumper gets reflectors on either side. The side profile of the MPV is not clearly visible in the images, but we can expect the MPV to be equipped with alloy wheels.
The interior of the Mahindra U321 MPV is expected to be premium with features such as a large touchscreen infotainment system, engine start/stop button, automatic climate control and leather seat upholstery. The MPV might borrow its features from the newly launched 2018 XUV 500.
The new Mahindra MPV will replace the Xylo and it will be a premium offering from the company. The Mahindra U321 will be based on the monocoque chassis and Mahindra will offer the MPV with three-row seats in a seven-seater or eight-seater configuration.
On the mechanical front, the Mahindra MPV is likely to draw power from a 1.6-litre mFalcon diesel engine producing 125bhp and 305Nm of torque. The petrol variant of the MPV will get a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine good for 163bhp. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox.
The safety features of the Mahindra U321 will include airbags as standard across all the variants, ABS, EBD, brake assist and reverse parking sensors. The U321 MPV will be a global product for Mahindra, developed at company's North American facility in Troy, Michigan.
Thoughts On The Mahindra U321 MPV
Mahindra is all set to enter the premium MPV segment in India with the introduction of the U321 MPV. The spotted model looks to be a production version of the MPV which is undergoing final phase of testing. Mahindra is expected to launch the U321 MPV in India by November 2018. Once launched, the Mahindra MPV will take on the segment-leader Toyota Innova Crysta.
