Mahindra To Stop Production Of Its Compact SUV Offerings — Will Concentrate On Mid-Size SUV Segment
Mahindra is looking to stop production of all its sub-four-metre SUV offerings in India. This includes the KUV100, TUV300 and the NuvoSport. Instead, Mahindra will concentrate on their mid-size SUV offerings; a segment they are well established in.
Mahindra's sub-four metre offerings haven't done well in the sales department for the company. With offerings such as the KUV100 recording a sales decline of 28 percent.
According to Livemint, Mahindra has now decided to shift its focus to the larger SUV and MPV segment in India. The company recently launched the Marazzo MPV in the country. This is said to one of the four new products from Mahindra.
Apart from the Mahindra Marazzo, the company is also said to introduce two other products in the mid-size and large SUV segment. One of them being the XUV700 (codenamed Y400).
However, this doesn't mean that the company will completely remove itself from the sub-four-metre SUV segment. Mahindra will replace the four slow-selling SUVs with the more premium XUV300 (based on the Ssangyong Tivoli).
The company feels the compact SUV segment is getting highly competitive with products from almost every manufacturer. Mahindra want to avoid getting into the stiff competition, especially after losing to Maruti in the segment, with their single Vitara Brezza offering.
Also another reason being that the prices of all passenger cars will tend to rise, once the new safety and emission norms come into place. Mahindra feels that it would be less of a risk selling mid-size SUV over the compact offerings, as these customers would be less price sensitive.
Also, the sale of large and mid-size SUV is projected to grow by over 14 percent between 2018 to 2021. This is compared to slightly lower 11 percent growth of compact SUVs during the same time period.
A source from Mahindrastated that the company would stick to their strengths while relying on their partnership with Ford to improve growth in the weaker segments.
Thoughts On Mahindra Stopping Production Of Their Compact SUV Offerings
Mahindra is set to concentrate on the mid-size SUV segment in the country. The company has been one of the leading UV manufacturers in India for a while now. Mahindra has also established themselves in the mid to large UV category and are now hoping to improve on their strengths.
