Mahindra Automobili Pininfarina — What To Expect From The Electric Supercar Brand
Indian automotive enthusiasts were excited to hear about Mahindra launching a new electric supercar brand called Automobili Pininfarina. Mahindra acquired Pininfarina, the Italian automotive design house, in 2015. Pininfarina is the name responsible for many iconic car designs, which include many Ferraris and Maseratis.
Automobili Pininfarina will be launching a new electric hypercar by 2020. The car is internally codenamed, PF-Zero. It will compete in the Bugatti Chiron territory, with its claimed 0-100km/h time of two seconds. But how will this affect the regular Mahindra? Here's what you should expect!
Better-Looking Mahindras
Although it has been a while since Mahindra got Pininfarina under the company, we haven't witnessed any major design upgrades in the present Mahindra lineup. Not many Mahindra products are awesome to look at, to be honest. But since Automobili Pininfarina is happening, we can keep our hopes up.
Indian cars concentrate more on cost-effectiveness and functionality more than design. The wider Indian buyers also do not demand a good design. Pininfarina could make a difference in that.
Insane Indian SUVs
If Pininfarina does contribute to the design of Mahindra, we can expect some insane SUVs from India. Mahindra had shared a teaser of the Komodo concept, a few years back. The Komodo hit all the automotive headlines back then, even though everyone was sure that it won't make it into production. But with inputs from Pininfarina, concepts like the Komodo could come into production.
The same applies to the Mahindra Stinger concept which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2018. Rumours suggest that a high-performance SUV codenamed PF1 is also happening.
Affordable Premium Electric Cars
Currently, Mahindra Electric sells the e2o, e2o-Plus, e-Verito and the e-Supro. These are all budget electric cars sold at a higher price compared to a petrol/diesel alternative. Electric transportation in India is still in its infant stage due to lack of proper infrastructure. However, with advancement in technology and the demand for cleaner automobiles, the EV market could grow faster.
The technology involved in making the PF-Zero can be filtered down to affordable passenger cars, especially in premium electric cars. Are you looking forward to an all-electric Indian luxury sedan?
Formula E Technology In Road Cars
Mahindra Racing is a popular name in Formula E. The new Mahindra-Pininfarina product is expected to share some engineering with the Formula E race car. If that is the case, the products from Automobili Pininfarina will showcase some staggering performance figures. From many examples, we all know that brands with strong motorsports counterparts come up with some highly-capable road cars.
Global Exposure For The Indian Automotive Industry
Being designers of Ferraris and many other supercars, Pininfarina is a name known by enthusiasts all over the world. By acquiring Pininfarina, Mahindra had already increased their brand image outside India. Tata Motors was a topic of discussion for the global automotive media when they unveiled the Tamo Racemo coupe at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Imagine what would happen if Mahindra unveils an electric supercar, that too, a Bugatti rival!
Inputs From Rimac Automobili
Besides Tesla, the big name in the electric performance car scene is Rimac Automobili. The Croatian automotive brand is famous for their Concept One electric supercar. Recently, Rimac also unveiled their latest C_Two concept at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The C_Two boasts of 1915bhp and 0-100km/h time of a whopping 1.85 seconds. Rimac has also worked with leading supercar manufacturers such as Koenigsegg and Aston Martin.
The Koenigsegg Regera and Aston Martin AMRB-001 hypercars are two of the most extreme hypercars in the planet today. The new Mahindra Pininfarina PF-Zero could just be another one.
Sergio Pininfarina's Dream
Sergio Pininfarina, the late founder of Pininfarina, always dreamt of having a luxury automotive brand under his name. That was also the sole reason why he started the design studio. Through Mahindra's Automobili Pininfarina, headed by former Audi MD, Michael Perschke, the dream will be fulfilled after more than 50 years.
Thoughts On The New Mahindra Pininfarina Electric Supercar
Automobili Pininfarina will be an iconic name in the hypercar market for sure. The first product from the electric supercar brand will technically be India's first electric supercar too. To build a product that rivals the benchmark Bugatti Chiron requires a lot of technology and engineering; some of which might filter down to future Mahindra products. If electric supercars are a thing of the future, India seems to be gearing up for it through Automobili Pininfarina.
