Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Makes New Nürburgring Lap Record, Just Like That
Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Breaks Nürburgring Lap Record: The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ becomes the fastest 'production' car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack in Germany. The final version (supposedly) of the Aventador finished the lap in just 6:44.97 minutes, beating the previous 6:47.3-minute lap record set by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
The Aventador SVJ is yet to be officially unveiled and the car was wearing camouflage during the run. As per reports, many have confirmed their bookings even before its launch.
'SVJ' stands for Super Veloce Jota (pronounced as "super velo-che hoe-ta") and is named after the iconic Lamborghini Miura P400 Jota from 1970.
The lap time was set by Lamborghini's official driver, Marco Mapelli. The run was supported by the Italian supercar company's R&D team and officials from Pirelli tyres. The supercar was fitted with cameras, various telemetry devices and a VBOX GPS speed sensor.
The full specifications of the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ have not been shared by the company. However, it is obviously the fastest and most powerful Aventador model ever made. The supercar employs a lot of lightweight materials and has a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 1.98kg per hp.
The re-engineered 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 is expected to produce upwards of 750bhp and 700Nm of torque. All the power will be sent to all four wheels while rear-wheel-steer ensures fast turns.
The Aventador SVJ will come with a set of specifically-developed Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres as standard (the Nürburgring record was set with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres).
The V12 supercar will also feature an updated version of Lamborghini's patented active aerodynamics technology – ALA 2.0. First introduced in the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, ALA (Aerodynamica Lamborghini Attiva) provides optimal downforce during all driving conditions through ‘aero vectoring' and motion of the rear spoiler.
Why Breaking Nürburgring Records Is A Big Deal
The Nürburgring Nordschleife is the most iconic racetrack in the world and many historic races have been conducted there. Also known as the ‘Green Hell', the racetrack was built in the late 1920s, after which the track changed a lot in terms of layout and distance, over the years.
Today, the track extends 24.4 kilometres (20.8 kilometres without a major part of an F1 circuit) and is open to public every day unless a race is taking place. Visitors can drive any form of a road-legal vehicle around the track for the so-called ‘Touristenfahrten'. Some often drive or ride to set their own track records.
The previous record-holder, 991.2 Porsche 911 GT2 RS taking a turn at the track.
It takes quite some driving skills and experience to really push a car around the Nürburgring. The tricky corners and never-ending straights have claimed over 200 lives in the past 90 years. However, car enthusiasts still dream of going flat out through it at some point in their lives.
The challenging layout of the track requires drivers to push their cars to the limits. If a car excels at the Nürburgring, it means that it is extremely-capable in a performance perspective; the shortest lap time, the better. This is the reason why manufacturers often go after ‘Ring records' to market their performance products, and so did Lamborghini.
Thoughts On The New Nürburgring Record Set By The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ
The Lamborghini Aventador is believed to be the rawest form of a modern road-legal supercar. When the rest of its competition is employing lightning-fast dual-clutch transmissions to shift gears, Aventador models still retain a harsh single-clutch semi-automatic gearbox. Nothing much is known about the car as of now, but the new Nürburgring lap record explains a lot!
