India-Bound Volkswagen T-Cross Official Video Released — To Rival Hyundai Creta
German automaker Volkswagen is gearing up for the unveiling of its new compact SUV named as the T-Cross. In the Indian market, the Volkswagen T-Cross will lock horns with the Hyundai Creta. Ahead of its unveil, Volkswagen has released a new video of the T-Cross finished in camouflaged livery.
The official video of the Volkswagen T-Cross almost fully reveals the compact SUV. The T-Cross will be first sold in the international markets and the compact SUV is expected to hit the Indian shores by 2020 or 2021. Compared to the global-spec T-Cross, the India-spec SUV is expected to be tweaked to suit the Indian conditions.
The Volkswagen T-Cross sold in the global markets will be based on the Volkswagen's flexible MQB platform while the India-spec model will be underpinned by the MQB A0 platform. Volkswagen is expected to tweak the design, interior and the overall dimensions. The India-spec T-Cross will also get different engines.
The Volkswagen T-Cross will be offered with both the petrol and diesel options. The petrol engine is expected to be the 1-litre unit that will be manufactured in India. The 1-litre petrol engine produces 115bhp and 200Nm of torque. The localisation of the petrol engine will keep the costs low.
The diesel variant of the Volkswagen T-Cross is likely to draw power from a 1.5-litre engine that is offered on the Polo and the Vento. But the diesel engine will be tweaked to comply with the BS-VI emission norms which will be implemented from April 2020. Transmission options will include a manual and a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The Volkswagen T-Cross will be pitted against the Hyundai Creta and even the new Renault Duster in the Indian market. But we expect the T-Cross to be a more premium option as compared to the Creta. Currently, Volkswagen's target is to capture the compact SUV segment in the country and it is also part of its India 2.0 strategy.
Thoughts On The Volkswagen T-Cross Compact SUV
The compact SUV segment has seen a rapid growth in the Indian market and major automakers are launching products in this segment. Now, Volkswagen is also looking to capture the segment and plans to launch the T-Cross in India. We expect the T-Cross to be a hit in the country if Volkswagen gets the pricing right.
