Hyundai Is Considering A Micro-SUV To Rival The Renault Kwid
Hyundai India recently stated that they will be introducing eight new products in the Indian market by 2020. According to Autocar India, the company is developing a micro-SUV for India. This upcoming model will be placed under Hyundai's forthcoming Carlino concept-based car, codenamed – QXI.
Y.K. Koo, Managing Director and CEO, Hyundai Motor India shared, "Maybe later, we can introduce a micro-SUV that is smaller than the QXI. This would enable us to have a strong SUV line-up comprising of the micro SUV, the sub-4 metre QXI and the Creta and then maybe the Tucson."
However, the upcoming micro-SUV will not be a part of the earlier-mentioned list of the eight cars. Hyundai India is now conducting surveys and studies to understand the potential for such a micro-SUV across the nation.
The new model is said to be a good three-four years away from production. On the contrary, a bulk volume product like an affordable micro-SUV will require additional production facility. The company's current plant is running beyond its installed capacity of 700,000 units a year on a three-shift basis. So, an additional capacity before 2020 is very unlikely.
Some sources hint that Hyundai's decision to go ahead with the micro-SUV could be due to their competition's plans, especially Maruti Suzuki's own micro-SUV – the production version of the Future-S Concept.
India, on the other hand, has got a booming market in the SUV space. The brand'sCreta model has been a big-seller since 2015. Hyundai also enjoys a huge amount of success in the small car segment largely because of its modern-looking cars such as the i10 and Elite i20.
The cars in the company's portfolio have low maintenance, excellent mileage and are also easy to drive in city conditions. The new micro-SUV isn't expected to be any different. As of now, the company is going to launch their new small car (Santro) during the festive season.
Thoughts On Hyundai's Micro-SUV
Since our country has a large market for SUVs, Hyundai India is doing the right thing by launching this micro-SUV. As far as sales are concerned, the company is doing pretty good numbers, especially in the small-car market.
