Hyundai Confirms Kona EV & Nexo FCEV Launch In India; Committed To 'Zero Emission Mobility' In India
Hyundai has confirmed the launch of their Kona EV and the Nexo FCEV for the Indian market.
Hyundai Motors has showcased the Kona EV at the Move Summit (Global Mobility Summit 2018) held in New Delhi. The Kona EV will be the first all-electric model from the Korean Car manufacturer in India. The Hyundai Kona EV is expected to be introduced in India, sometime next year.
Hyundai is expected to introduce the Kona EV in India as a CKD (Completely Knocked-Down) unit. The car will be available in select Hyundai dealerships across the country.
The car once launched in Indiais expected to be priced around Rs 25 lakh, ex-showroom. The high price for the caris due to the 12 percent import duties on electric cars. However, to promote EVs in India, Hyundai is expecting the government to decrease the tax, down to 5 percent.
Euisun Chung, Vice Chairman, Hyundai Motor Company, stated, "Hyundai is already leading the future mobility solutions and is committed to realiseIndia's vision of ‘Shared', ‘Connected' and ‘Zero Emission Mobility'."
"Hyundai has a long-term commitment towards Make-in-India for the past 20 years and today we are proud to showcase the KONA Electric at the Global Mobility Summit."
He further added, "The Kona Electric is a true expression of Hyundai's technological advancements in the field of Eco & Clean Mobility. I am confident that this Global Mobility Summit will herald a new era of Smart and Clean mobility in India."
As part of the summit, Hyundai Motors also confirmed the launch of the Nexo FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) in India. The Hyundai Nexo FCEV was also showcased at the ongoing Move Summit 2018.
The Nexo FCEV comes in an all-new platform. The car uses a 95kW fuel cell to power its electric motor, producing 161bhp and 395Nm of torque. The FCEV claims a 0 - 100km/h in 9.2 seconds while achieving a top speed of 177km/h.
However, the most important aspect of the Nexo FCEV is its range. The car returns a range of 609km on a single charge. The FCEV uses a hydrogen fuel tank, which can be filled completely in a matter of minutes.
The Hyundai Nexo FCEV, however, will at a later stage, with the timeframe yet to be announced by the company. Although, with the launch of the Kona scheduled sometime in 2019, we can expect the Nexo sometime in 2020.
The Move Summitalso saw the first prototype of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR electric for India. The electric WagonR will be the first all-electric offering from the company in 2020.
Thoughts On Hyundai's Upcoming Electric Vehicles
Hyundai is readying the launch of electric vehicles in a couple of years. Unlike Maruti which is looking at hybrid cars, before the introduction of an all-electric vehicle. Hyundai will directly launch an all-electric car, in the form of the Kona EV.
