Hyundai is planning to discontinue their Eon hatchback offering in India. The Korean carmaker will replace the ageing Eon, with the upcoming hatchback, codenamed AH2.

The all-new hatchback, the AH2 is expected to bring back the 'Santro' name in India. The new Santro hatchback once launched, will be placed between the entry-level Eon and the Grand i10 in Hyundai India line-up. However, the Eon will be phased-out slowly by 2019, rather than being discontinued suddenly.

Livemint sources, stated, "It is confirmed that the Eon will be discontinued and some suppliers have also been told that the product will be available for just a year, a few months back,"

They also added, "This is also a very prudent decision by a successful company like Hyundai since Eon will not be to stand the new crash norms. So, they are replacing it with a better product which will adhere to all the new norms."

Hyundai, however, will not entirely scrap the Eon platform. The company is expected to use it for the development of new vehicles in the future.

The sales of the Hyundai Eon were constantly on the decline. The sales for the Eon has been recording a decline of 13 per cent every fiscal year. However, during the last fiscal year, the entry-level hatchback did manage to recover sales and record a marginal growth of 1.7 per cent.
