Hyundai And Audi Announce A Multi-Year Partnership Agreement

Hyundai and Audi have announced a multi-year partnership deal. This partnership will see the two companies working together to develop fuel cell technology.

Hyundai Motors and Audi AG have announced a multi-year agreement between them. This partnership will see the two companies working together to develop fuel cell technology.

The companies will also share patents and other resources as part of their agreement. Combined, they will develop a broad range of FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) components and technologies.

The two companies, Audi and Hyundai will also make joint efforts in developing FCEVs to lead the automotive industry towards a sustainable future. However, they have not yet disclosed the duration of their partnership.

The partnership will include the affiliate companies of Hyundai and Audi as well. This includes, but is not limited to Kia Motors and Volkswagen.

The partnership between the two companies will take advantage of the R&D capabilities of both Hyundai and Audi. Hence, the partnership will also allow mutual access to fuel cell components.

Hyundai Motors already use FCEV technology on their ix35 crossover. The company launched the SUV back in 2013 and currently sells them in over 18 countries.

The first step will see Hyundai sharing their R&D knowledge, based on the development of their ix35 fuel cell and the NEXO.

As part of the agreement, Audi will be responsible for the development of the fuel cell technology. The company will take advantage of Hyundai's FCEV parts supply chain. Audi is planning tolaunch its first fuel cell vehicle by 2020.

Euisun Chung, Vice Chairman, Hyundai Motor Company, stated, "This agreement is another example of Hyundai's strong commitment to creating a more sustainable future whilst enhancing consumers' lives with hydrogen-powered vehicles, the fastest way to a truly zero-emission world."

"We are confident that the Hyundai Motor Group-Audi partnership will successfully demonstrate the vision and benefits of FCEVs to the global society."

Peter Mertens, Board Member for Technical Development, Audi AG, stated, "The fuel cell is the most systematic form of electric driving and thus a potent asset in our technology portfolio for the emission-free premium mobility of the future."

"On our FCEV roadmap, we are joining forces with strong partners such as Hyundai. For the breakthrough of this sustainable technology, cooperation is the smart way to leading innovations with attractive cost structures."

Fuel Cell technology is not yet a mainstream alternative option for major car manufacturers. This is mainly due to the infrastructure cost of hydrogen fuel cells.

However, with more manufacturers taking initiatives, we can expect the overall costs to come down in the future.
