Government Scraps Second Tender For EVs — No Clarification On Exact Requirement
EESL and the government have scrapped the second tender for 10,000 electric vehicles. The government will wait for clarification on the specification.
The tender for 10,000 electric vehicles floated by EESL, has been put on hold after a recent meeting. According to ET Auto, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) has scrapped its second tender for EVs.
EESL had released the second tender, back in April this year. This second tender for 10,000 electric vehicles was secured by Tata Motors and Mahindra. The two companies have already delivered 350 and 150 units of EVs, respectively.
However, the government has now put the tender on hold. The government will release the second tender once there are clarifications on the correct specifications. This, the government hopes will allow more players, including high-end luxury car makers to bid for the tender.
The government recently also reported that the two EVs based on the Tigor and the Verito lacked sufficient range. Officials claimed a range of just 80 to 82km on a single charge in city conditions. They also stated that both companies used small 17Kw batteries when the global average for the battery pack is 27 - 35kw.
Tata Motors responded by stating that the stats were clearly mentioned to EESL. The EVs supplied to the government used 17Kw battery packs, with a maximum range between 100 - 120km in the city.
However, the first tender secured by Tata Motors back in August 2017, will continue. As part of the first tender, Tata Motors will supply the government with 10,000 EVs by March 2019.
Thoughts On EESL Scrapping the Second Tender For EVs
EESL has had a lot of concerns regarding the range requirements for the EVs. With the second tender put on hold, the government will clarify all the specific requirements. The government also hopes to see more players, especially luxury car makers bidding for the second tender.
