Chandigarh Traffic Police To Fine Cars For Having Closed Outside Mirrors

Traffic police in Chandigarh will soon start issuing challans against cars with closed outside mirrors. Starting from October 1st this year, all cars with closed ORVMs will be issued a fine of Rs 300.

Starting from 1st October 2018, residents of Chandigarh will be fined Rs 300 for keeping their ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirror) closed. According to Financial Express, the decision has been taken by the Standing Committee of Administrator's Advisory Council.

The city traffic police will first run an awareness campaign. This campaign will run for a period of three months, to help keep the people informed, before implementing the rule from October.

There will also be a new mobile application, through which people can send photos of rule violators. These images will be sent directly to the traffic police.

Accordingly, the images should contain the registration number plates of the cars violating the rule. The images will be used by the police to identify the owner of the car and send a challan to their address.

A meeting held by the Advisory Council also mentioned about action being taken against three-wheelers without the proper permit. In the meeting, it was also decided that all old CCTV cameras will be replaced by new ones. The city traffic police will also install night vision cameras to keep crime in check.

The move to fine car drivers with closed rear view mirrors is a good step taken by the Chandigarh traffic police department. Closed mirrors increase the blind spot in cars, leading to avoidable incidents on the road.

While the results of the new rule can be assessed only after it comes into effect. It is an important safety measure, which should be applied in other states as well.
