While travelling National Highways, we often come across a number of toll plazas. Have you ever seen a board which reads 'FASTag' above one of the toll booths, allowing cars to pass by without stopping? Well, those cars which use FASTag.

FASTag is a rechargeable tag which allows tolls to automatically deduct the set toll charges for the vehicle, without having to stop for any cash transactions. The tag uses Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) technology and is fixed on the vehicle's windscreen. We can start using the tag after linking our account to it.

Thoughts On The RFID FASTag

The FASTag has been implemented by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), along with certain select banks.

The usage of FASTag has been made compulsory in India, starting from the 1st of December 2019. The Indian government has also mandated all brand dealerships to mandatorily add FASTag IDs on the vehicle at the time of sale itself. All new cars will now come with the FASTag ID, for which the customer will be paying a small additional amount of around Rs 500. The FASTag program is currently present in over 240 tolls across the country.
