Car Sales Report November 2018: The sales report of various car manufacturers in the country has been released for the month of November 2018. Sales during the previous festive month have been surprisingly low, with just Mahindra & Honda recording a growth in sales.

India's leading car manufacturer, Maruti has also surprisingly failed to record a growth in sales, especially during the festive season. Other brands such as Hyundai, with their launch of the Santro, also failed to record a positive sales figure, during the previous month.

Here is a report of some of the major car brands and their sales performance in the Indian market, for the month of November 2018.

Maruti Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki recorded a total sales of 153,539 units in the month of November 2018. Out of this, 146,018 units were from domestic sales while the remaining 7,521 units were from exports.

This translates to an overall sales decline of 0.7 per cent from Movember 2017 when the company recorded 154,600 units of overall sales. However, during the previous month, export sales alone fell by 19.1 per cent while domestic sales recorded a decline of just 0.5 per cent.

Maruti Suzuki also recently launched its next-generation Ertiga in the Indian market. The MPV comes with a starting price of Rs 7.44 Lakh, ex-showroom (Delhi).

Tata Motors

Tata Motors recorded overall sales of 50,470 units in the month of November 2018. This is a 4 per cent decline in sales compared to November 2017 with 52,464 units.

The company stated that the decline is due to low consumer sentiments as a result of a liquidity crisis in the industry. The company stated, "November 2018 was a challenging month for the industry with muted consumer sentiment caused by a liquidity crunch, non-availability of retail finance and moderate festive season".

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles recorded domestic sales of 16,928 units last month compared to 17,157 units sold In November 2017, this is a marginal drop of 1 per cent. Exports, on the other hand, decreased from 4,927 units in November 2017 to 4,604 units last month.

Mahindra was one of the few major brands to record a growth in sales for the month of November 2018. The company recorded a growth of 17 per cent from 38,570 units in November 2017 to 43,101 units last month.

Rajan Wadhera, President, Automotive Sector, M&M Ltd, stated, "We have registered a double-digit growth in our overall sales. However, adverse macro-economic conditions have impacted the growth forecast for the automotive industry in general. Going forward, we hope that the decrease in fuel prices and improving liquidity will drive demand for passenger vehicles.

Domestic sales for Mahindra improved by 15 percent, growing from 36,039 units last year to 41,564 units in November 2018. Export sales, on the other hand, improved significantly by 40 per cent. Mahindra recorded sales of 3,537 units in November 2018, compared to 2,531 units during the same month last year.

Toyota India

Toyota Kirloskar India is another major brand who has failed to achieve a positive sales figure for the month of November 2018. The company recorded a total of 11,390 units during the past month, compared to 13,420 units during the same month last year.

Out of the total sales, domestic sales for the brand clocked in 10,721 units of sales in the previous month. This is compared to the 12,734 units of domestic sales in November 2017. Export sales also recorded a minor decrease in sales from 686 units last year to 669 units in the previous month.

N. Raja, Deputy MD, Toyota Kirloskar Motor stated, "Fluctuating exchange rates, rising fuel costs and high-interest rates have impacted the consumer sentiment in the auto industry. The festive season has not been able to usual spur in customer demand. With the new year around the corner, we hope there will be a positive momentum in the buying sentiments ensuring growth in year-end sales.

Toyota India has also announced a hike in prices for most of its product line-up in the country. The company, starting 1st January 2019 will increase prices of its entire product line-up by 4 per cent.

Ford India

Sales figures of Ford in India has registered 19,905 units in the month of November 2018. This is a drop from 27,019 units during the same month last year.

Out of the overall sales numbers, Ford's domestic sales stood at 6,375 units as against 7,777 units last year. Export numbers also registered a drop from 19,242 units in November 2017 to 13,530 units in November 2018.

Anurag Mehrotra, President & MD, Ford India, stated, "With consumer sentiment continuing to be low due to the general economic situation, we expect continued volatility in fuel prices and inflation to cause headwinds for the passenger vehicle industry."

Hyundai Motors India

Hyundai Motors India has also recorded a slump in sales in the previous month. The Japanese brand has recorded a marginal decline of just 0.67 percent in sales between November 2017 and 2018.

The company recorded domestic sales of 43,709 units in November 2018, as compared to 44,008 units during the same month last year.

Vikas Jain, National Sales Head, Hyundai Motor India Ltd. stated, "Hyundai registered domestic sales of 43,709 units on the strong performance of newly launched All-new Santro with the sale of more than 8,800 units for the month of November 2018.

Hyundai recently launched their all-new Santro in the Indian market. The new Hyundai Santro 2018 has been received extremely well in the Indian market with already 40,000 bookings, within a month of its launch.

Hyundai also offered a number of heavy discounts of up to Rs 1 lakh during the month of November 2018. The year-end discounts were offered across their entire range of products including the i10 Grand, i20 Elite, Elantra and the Verna.

Honda Cars India

Honda Cars have recorded a growth of 10 per cent, during the month of November 2018. The company recorded sales of 13,006 units in the previous month, compared to 11,819 units during the corresponding month last year.

Rajesh Goel, Sr. Vice President & Director, Sales and Marketing, Honda Cars India Ltd stated, "While the overall auto industry's growth has remained muted, HCIL could register 10% growth last month. This is largely due to Diwali which happened in Nov this year as compared to being in October last year along with the continued good performance of the all-new Amaze and robust sales of models like City & WR-V."

Verdict

November 2018 has been a challenging month for most four-wheeler brands in the country. The fluctuating fuel prices along with a number of other issues put a dampener on the car sales, during the festive season. However, most car manufacturers are hoping to bounce back from the slump and have already started offering year-end discounts to attract more sales.
