BS-VI (BS6) To Up Petrol-Diesel Car Price Difference By Almost Rs 2.5 Lakh
Post-2020, only BS-VI (or BS6) cars will be allowed to sell on the Indian automotive market. Many manufacturers have already introduced BS-VI-compliant models ahead of this timeframe, while also implementing the same in other models, step-by-step.
However, Autocar India shares that BS-VI-implementation will widen the price gap between petrol and diesel cars in India, by a good margin. Currently, diesel cars are costlier by around Rs 1 lakh over its equivalent petrol model. This price difference will rise to almost Rs 2.5 lakh, as per reports.
C V Raman, Senior Executive Director (Engineering) at Maruti Suzuki shared, "The cost equation is definitely going to change. A diesel car is going to be at least Rs 2 – 2.5 lakh higher than its equivalent BS-VI petrol model. Moreover, the sentiment is not very good on diesel. As of now, whether the customer will make that switchover is uncertain."
"We are doing Euro-V and Euro-VI (BS-V and BS-VI) all-together. Hence, we need to put DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and LNT (Lean NOx Trap). You have to control PM (Particulate Matter) and NOx (Nitrogen oxides) both at the same time. Normally, we'd go from one stage to another in a step-by-step manner, but here, the entire cost will happen at the same time," he further added.
Maruti Suzuki is going the hybrid approach with their SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) systems and ‘proper petrol hybrids' in the future. The Indian car company is working with Bosch to go about with this, with enough localisation of components. Hybrids also offer 30 per cent gain in mileage, in comparison to diesel's 25 per cent.
Hybrids will cost the company a lot of investment, but they are trying to manage it. Furthermore, a petrol-hybrid can easily cost more than a BS-VI-compliant diesel car. If this cannot be achieved, CNG is the other best option. In fact, Maruti CNG cars have hit a new five-lakh sales milestone.
Thoughts On The Petrol-Diesel Price Difference For BS-VI Cars
Emission norms are getting stricter than ever before as part of India's push towards a cleaner environment. Be it any change, it will have its own challenges, and pricing is the main challenge in this case. Rs 2.5 lakh is quite a difference between petrol and diesel cars, and we have to wait and see if the public is willing to accept this.
