BMW Recalls 7,900 Diesel Models In India Over Faulty EGR System — Part Of A Global Recall

BMW India has announced a recall of most of its diesel models sold in the country. The voluntary recall campaign from the German brand is to fix the vehicles EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) System.

The campaign is part of the worldwide recall from BMW which has affected over 1.6 million vehicles. In India, however, BMW has recalled a total of 7,900 cars manufactured between 2011 and 2016. Among them are; four-cylinder diesel vehicles manufactured between October 2011 and August 2016 and six-cylinder diesel models produced between March 2011 and July 2015.

In India, almost every model currently on sale has been covered under the campaign. These models include all the body styles of the 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7-Series while the SUVs include the X3, X5 and X6.

According to BMW, the defective EGRs would collect a layer of soot deposits which at high temperatures could lead to melting of the intake manifold and also cause a fire, in certain extreme cases. There have already been few reports in South Korea, however, no injuries were reported.

BMW India is said to get in touch with their customers directly regarding the recall. According to the company, the service will be done free of cost and can take anywhere from one to three hours depending on the model.

The company recently introduced a petrol variant of their X1 product offering in India. The BMW X1 sDrive20i comes with a BS-VI compliant 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a price tag of Rs 37.50 lakh, ex-showroom (India). Apart from the new petrol engine, the 2018 X1 remains identical to its diesel counterpart, with the same features and equipment list.

Most of the lineup of BMW products in India are locally assembled at the company's plant in Chennai. BMW also owns a number of other car brands globally including MINI and Rolls Royce.
