Three Indian Automotive Giants Collaborate To Work On Electric Bus
Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland and Mahindra & Mahindra have collaborated to work on a electric bus.
India is striving hard to shift to the electric vehicles by 2030. Now, to boost the cause, three Indian automotive giants have collaborated to work on an electric bus.
Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland and Mahindra & Mahindra have joined to work on an electric bus. Previously, the three companies partnered to work on electric cars, but the project was abandoned.
The three Indian automotive companies are rivals in the commercial vehicle segment in the country. Now the three companies have formed a consortium to find a solution for electric bus mobility.
Speaking to Moneycontrol, Chief of International Operations, M&M, Arvind Mathew said, "The car consortium for which the companies had got together is converted to an e-bus consortium."
As per sources the participation and contribution of government are very important for the success of this project. The Central Government has assured to bear half the cost of the project.
The electric bus project does not involve any foreign companies as all the three firms do not have an international partner. The absence of foreign support will lead to healthy work atmosphere for the development of joint venture.
India's leading bus manufacturer Tata Motors has already developed an electric bus. The company is trying to market the bus to the Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation.
Ashok Leyland was the pioneer to launch all-electric bus called as Circuit. The electric bus has a range of 120km on a single charge. Mahindra also stated that it would introduce a 32-seater electric bus by 2019.
The key motto of the project is to bring down the cost of the electric bus which is very high. A 9-metre electric bus from Tata Motors costs Rs 1.6 crore and the 12-metre bus costs Rs 2 crore.
