SAIC Confirms India Debut With MG Brand
Chinese carmaker SAIC will enter India with MG Brand and the first model is expected to roll out in 2019.
Chinese automaker SAIC will officially make its India debut in 2019 with a complete setup of production, sales and service operations.
The company will commence its India entry with the MG brand, the iconic British brand that was acquired by the carmaker over a decade ago. SAIC is most likely to begin operations from the General Motors' Halol factory in Gujarat.
As a matter of fact, SAIC's Indian subsidiary is registered as MG Motor India and will be headed by former GM India CEO Rajeev Chaba.
MG Motor India has a broad range of models and body styles to pick from which include hatchbacks, sedans, MPVs, SUVs, hybrids and even electric cars. Given the current popularity of SUVs in India, SAIC is likely to bring in SUVs.
SAIC is still in talks with GM to take over its shuttered Halol plant in Gujarat but is yet to sign a formal agreement to acquire it officially.
Once the location for the facility is finalised SAIC is likely to invest upwards of Rs 3,000 crore in the first phase to establish a strong footing with highly localised and cost-competitive product.
