Peugeot Set To Return To India After 20 Years; Set To Take Over Former Ambassador Factory
French carmaker Peugeot is set to return to India, 20 years after quitting the country's market due to low demand.
French carmaker Peugeot is set to return to India 20 years after it left the shores of the country due to low demand for the 309 sedan it sold with the help of the Premier group.
According to French newspaper, Les Echos, Peugeot will announce its return to India through a manufacturing venture with New Delhi-based CK Birla Group. The paper went on to state that two companies would start a joint venture together to manufacture and sell Peugeot cars in the country.
Les Echos also stated that CK Birla Group would use a manufacturing plant in Chennai which is owned by the family conglomerate and was used to manufacture the iconic Hindustan Ambassador as the production facility to churn out Peugeots in India.
The Chennai production facility is currently used to put together Mitsubishi's SUVs for India and is capable of producing 12,000 cars per annum.
Peugeot which had a brush with bankruptcy in 2014 had earlier pledged to find an Indian partner by 2018 to help it get into a market that registers about 3 million new vehicles a year.
