Exclusive: Mahindra’s Toyota Innova Rival Spotted Testing In Chennai
Mahindra is all set to introduce a new MPV in India and the test mule has been spotted testing in Chennai.
Home-grown automaker Mahindra & Mahindra is all set to enter the MPV segment in India with its new vehicle codenamed as U321.
Mahindra has been testing the U321 MPV for quite some time in India. Now, we have spotted the MPV yet again testing in Guindy, Chennai. This time the pictures reveal a lot of details of the vehicle.
The front fascia of the vehicle features typical MPV silhouette with eight slat grille similar to the XUV500. The MPV also features projector headlamps with a slight kink at the lower part which looks like the turn indicators. The bumper plays host to the fog lamps and boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights.
The side profile of the U321 MPV is similar to its rival, the Toyota Innova Crysta. The test vehicle is equipped with 5-spoke alloy wheels. The rear of the MPV sports vertically stacked tail lights. The hatch flows deep into the bumper giving it a low loading lip.

Mahindra planned to introduce a new vehicle to replace the Xylo in India but ended up developing a premium offering in the MPV segment. The U321 was designed by the company's North American team.
The Mahindra U321 MPV is based on the all-new platform and is using a monocoque chassis. The MPV has three-row seats which suggest that Mahindra will offer the vehicle in a 7-seater or 8-seater configuration.
The Mahindra MPV is expected to draw power from the existing 2-litre mHawk diesel engine or an all-new 1.6-litre petrol unit which is being developed jointly by Mahindra, and it's Korean subsidiary, Ssangyong.
DriveSpark Thinks!
Toyota has been ruling the MUV/MPV segment in India for a long time. Now, Mahindra is looking to dethrone the Japanese automaker in the MPV segment with the introduction of its new vehicle, but to do that the pricing will be crucial. The U321 MPV might be showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo in February, and we can expect the launch sometime in 2018. The MPV is likely to carry a price tag of around Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh.
