Jaguar Land Rover Now Use BorgWarner’s Two-Stage Turbochargers
Jaguar Land Rover use the BorgWarner R2S turbochargers for the latest 2.0-litre diesel engines. Here’s more.
Jaguar Land Rover, the UK carmaker now owned by Tata Motors now use BorgWarner's regulated two-stage turbochargers (R2S) in the company's new 2.0-litre diesel engines.
Currently, the Range Rover Sport and the new Land Rover Discovery use the R2S turbocharging mechanism. The R2S turbochargers use a water-cooled compressor housing, which delivers better low-end torque, enhances fuel efficiency, and is also cleaner regarding emission.
The BorgWarner R2S turbochargers use two series-connected turbochargers of different sizes to offer high boost pressure and linear performance. One features a variable turbine geometry (VTG) for the high-pressure stage and is controlled by an electric actuator.
As the engine speed increases, the exhaust gas is directed towards a larger, low-pressure turbo. The BorgWarner R2S adapts to changes with regards to engine operation quickly, helping with better efficiency and eliminating lag.

DriveSpark Thinks!
Forced induction has come a long way from its conceptualisation. Technology, creeping into automobiles has helped improve mechanicals such a turbochargers, and the BorgWarner R2S is a good example. Turbo diesel engines have suffered severe lags in the past, but modern day engines are getting to the point where they are lag-free.
