The Original Hummer Lives Again — But Only In The Land Of The Dragons
Debuted at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, the so-called Humvee C-Series is the result of Humvee Export. VLF Automotive will assemble the redesigned Hummer H1.
Do you remember the Hummer? The Hummer was originally released in the civilian market on March 14, 1992. The Hummer H1 owes its popularity to the pictures from Operation Desert Storm and the spirited crusade from actor-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger, who owns several versions of Hummer vehicles.
But alas, the Hummer's production was discontinued in 2006 because of its diesel guzzling engine and new emission norms in 2007 killed the last of Hummers. The Hummer H1 came in three variants: a convertible-like soft top, a four-door hardtop Sport Utility Truck and an Alpha Wagon body version.
Back to the future, the Hummer H1 is making a come back in 2017. Debuted at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, the so-called Humvee C-Series is the result of Humvee Export. The company is a consortium of five investors and enthusiasts, who named VLF Automotive to assemble the redesigned Hummer H1.
The Hummer C-Series cannot go on to become a production version for the U.S. even though it's built in Auburn Hills, Michigan; AM General continues to produce the HMMWV (High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle).
The C-Series made by Humvee Export, therefore, will be exported to Africa, Europe, the Middle East and, as of January next year, China, it just so happens the Chinese are insane about the vehicle.
VLF can do this without treading on General Motors' toes since AM General, the H1's contract manufacturer, continues to sell C-Series kits. It started selling them in 2013, Humvee Export then has VLF build the C-Series for export globally.
The Humvee C-Series is offered with a 6.5-litre diesel V8 mill with three power outputs - 190bhp and 522Nm, 205bhp and 597Nm or 250bhp and 597Nm - or a 6.2-litre LS3 V8 unit producing 430bhp and 575Nm of torque.
Regardless of the power plants, the 4-speed automatic is the only gearbox available for the C-Series.
Here is how Humvee Export describes its new Hummer C-Series: "With a host of off-road-ready options, including a central tire inflation system, hardened doors, aircraft-aluminum riveted body and trimmed-out interior, the C-Series is ready to meet any rugged travel needs."
