Hybrid Variants Of Honda City And Jazz Confirmed For India
Honda has confirmed that it will introduce the hybrid variants of the City and Jazz in India.
The Government of India is keen towards shifting to all-electric vehicles by 2030. Several automakers are already working on developing electric cars for the Indian market. But Honda seems to be going in the opposite direction.
ETAuto reports that Honda will launch the hybrid variants of the City and Jazz in India when both the products are updated in the country.
The Honda City sedan and the Jazz hatchback are due for an update in 2020. The all-new models will be introduced in the hybrid avatar. But it is a surprising decision from the Japanese automaker as the tax rates on hybrid vehicles are very high in India.
The Honda City and Jazz hybrid are already sold in the Japanese market. Both the cars draw power from a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 108bhp and 134Nm of torque. The engine is coupled to an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery which produces 29.5bhp and 170Nm of torque.

The combined output stands at 138bhp and 170Nm of torque. The hybrid avatar of the City and Jazz will come with a 7-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission delivering power to the front wheels.
Honda claims a fuel efficiency of 25kpl which makes the hybrid variants as efficient as the diesel models but produces way less exhaust emissions. Both the hybrid cars will easily comply with the BS-VI emission norms which will be effective from 2020.
The reason behind Honda's decision to introduce hybrid models instead of electrical vehicles might surprise us. But it makes sense as the Indian government has no strategy for electrification of vehicles but simply asks all the automakers to shift to electric vehicles by 2030. Honda also feels that the hybrid cars will be accepted by Indian buyers as they are similar to the conventional vehicles.
DriveSpark Thinks!
Honda has decided to go with hybrid vehicles instead of electric vehicles in India. Toyota recently halted the production of Camry Hybrid due to the high tax levied on hybrid vehicles. But Honda is going in the opposite direction and plans to have City and Jazz hybrid models in the country. We are not sure how this will pan out for the Japanese company. But one thing is sure; the emission levels will drastically come down by the introduction of hybrid vehicles.
