German automotive components firm Bosch has announced the debut of its new Electric Power Steering System(ESP) with fail-operational function at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show.

The system which enables a driver or an autopilot system to make a safe stop in a rare case of a single failure is a major requirement to develop a fully autonomous driving technology.

The fail-operational technology will allow the OEMs to comply with the proposed fall-back strategy in the Federal Automated Vehicles Policy documents from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and National Traffic Highway Safety Association (NHTSA).

The electric power steering from Bosch enables an independent return to minimal risk condition with 50 percent assistance from electric steering through a fallback solution.

The system is capable of detecting any steering failure and will move to the electrical fallback solution. The driver can also steer the vehicle without sudden increase in steering force.

Whereas in the automated driving system, the EPS with fail-operational function can automatically steer the vehicle to a safe stop without the intervention of the driver. The production of EPS with the fail-operational function may commence from 2020.

President of Robert Bosch LLC, Mike Mansuetti said, "Highly automated driving can make a significant contribution to improving road safety and we've seen great interest from our OEM customers as well as the public in this technology."
